Sedation Dentistry
Relax—We’ve Got This!
Are you terrified of going to the dentist? You are not alone. But don’t worry because at Yates Center Dental we offer sedation dentistry to help put your mind and body at ease. We have the most reliable sedation solutions available to all our patients who are 12 years of age or older.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses pharmaceutical medication to help dental patients relax during a dental appointment or other dental procedures.
How Is Sedation Dentistry Administered?
Sedation dentistry uses a variety of sedation methods depending on the patient’s needs.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly called “laughing gas,” combined with oxygen is the most common form of sedation dentistry. The dental team will place a mask over your nose to administer the nitrous oxide. The dentist can then control the amount of sedation you receive. This gas tends to wear off quickly. Nitrous oxide is designed to relax you but typically won’t put you to sleep.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate and is typically administered in pill form. With oral sedation, people tend to feel heavy, have difficulty speaking, their memory is a bit fuzzy, and might feel as if time has passed faster than it really has. And many people become groggy enough to fall asleep during the procedure.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is administered through a vein and gives the patient the deepest sense of relaxation while still being conscious. Most patients will fall asleep when receiving IV sedation.
Who Should Request Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is best for people who have a real fear or uncontrollable anxiety that keeps them from going to the dentist. It’s also good for people who have a low threshold for pain, can’t sit still in the dentist’s chair, have extremely sensitive teeth, have a bad gag reflex, or those who have a significant amount of dental work that needs to be done.
Both adults and children can benefit from dentistry sedation, especially if they are terrified of going to the dentist or children who won’t cooperate with the dentist during a visit.
What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?
- Anxiety relief
- Reduction in gag reflexes
- Reduces discomfort before, during, and after a dental treatment
- Reduces jaw, neck, shoulder, and back tension
- Allows for faster treatment
- What Does Dental Sedation Feel Like?
How dental sedation feels depends entirely on the method of sedation used. For example, nitrous oxide gas will generally make people feel so relaxed they get the giggles due to the euphoric feeling it gives them.
Oral sedation gives most people a more “out of it” feeling. It makes it difficult to talk and think, and it causes most people to fall asleep.
