What Are Dental Crowns?
We will remove the damaged or cracked layer of the tooth and replace it with a new layer made out of either a very strong porcelain or gold. We can do this in one or two appointments, and your tooth will be protected and restored. Our teeth are made of layers, and that outside enamel layer is known as the enamel. It’s the hardest substance your body creates, over twice as strong as a bone! So if it needs to be replaced, we need a strong material to take its place. That’s a big reason why teeth that need to be crowned can’t just be “filled”.
Do I Need Dental Crowns?

A few of the reasons a patient may need dental crowns are due to the following:
Cracked tooth: When a tooth has a crack or cracks, a filling will not work because it will act as a wedge when you bite down and further crack the tooth. A crown will hug the tooth all the way around and will absorb the impact of the bite and protect the tooth. Think of a crown as an armored shell to secure the crack and prevent flexure of the crack and therefore reduce or eliminate further cracking or pain.
Large decay: When a cavity is too large and takes up most of the tooth, a filling will not work because the tooth is too weak to support it. If we placed one, it would likely break the tooth.
Large existing filling: Sometimes we see teeth with large existing silver or tooth-colored fillings. If there is decay or cracks around it, we cannot place another filling.
Basically, in terms of decay or damage, if we have to replace the entire chewing surface of the tooth, or we may have to replace the sides (walls) or the sharp points (cusps) then a crown is indicated over a filling. Crowns are more durable than fillings and are designed to replace larger damaged portions of teeth vs fillings.
